Tricky trend: vampy mulberry lips
29 Saturday Dec 2012
For those that dare, deep purple lips are bang on-trend. As seen on catwalks and red carpets, how does the trend translate for you and me?
I love the berry lips on Camilla Belle as her skintone warms the look up, and takes the harsh edge off a little. However sometimes you want to go all out vamp like Emma Stone at the French premiere of The Amazing Spiderman last summer.
So we’ve established that pale skinned ladies can pull off the look just as well as the olive-skinned. Brown and ebony skin also looks great with this look and the warmth of the skintone makes sure that the look is not too harsh.
Deep, vampy lips speak volumes by themselves. If you try a smokey eye or heavy false lashes, you’ll venture into OTT territory. Keep the rest of the face neutral, with a bit of blush to warm up the skin, and a slick of mascara. As Camilla shows, dewy glowing skin looks just as good as the matte shine-free skin on Emma Stone.
Make sure you prep and prime your lips well, as deep berry shades draw all eyes on your lips. Exfoliate dry lips with some sugar/ Vaseline mix and moisturise well.
Shades to try
Nars Velvet Matte lip pencil in Train Bleu is a rich, blue-based mulberry lip colour. It’s highly pigmented and gives a lovely even colour. The matte texture is unforgiving on dry, cracked lips, so exfoliate lips and moisturise them well before trying this one.
Sleek True Colour sheen lipstick in shade 786 Mulberry is my favourite vampy lipstick. It has the creamy texture of the Nars pencils but has a slight sheen finish. The formula is not super matte like the Nars pencils, and so is not drying on the lips. It is described as a sheen finish, which is between matte and glossy but nearer the matte end of the spectrum.
If the violet-toned deep mulberry shades are a bit intimidating for deep berry lip virgins, here’s a slightly redder shade to try. Bourjois lipstick in shade 24 Violine is a deep raspberry-red lipstick with a satin finish.
