Body Shop Drops of Light

The Drops of Light serum is by far my best impulse buy of 2016. I was thinking about adding a serum to my skincare routine, as most skincare specialists would recommend the use of a good serum. This serum kind of fell into my lap. I was in London the morning after an awards show and had a few hours to kill before my train home, so I indulged in a little window shopping.

The Body Shop*** had just launched three new skincare ranges, Oils of Life, Drops of Light and Drops of Youth and were demonstrating the benefits of the ranges, as well as offering an introductory discount. I opted for this one as I was looking for a light fluid serum for summer. The Drops of Youth is a bit more gloopy and I was just dipping my toes into the world of serums, so went with the lighter option.

With skincare, it’s hard to give an accurate first impression review, as you need to trial skincare for at least a month, ideally 2-3 months before you can really see (or not) the benefits. I’ve been using this twice daily for 6 months now and feel that I have given it a really good trial run.

Lightweight texture, that quickly absorbs into the skin: It is a water-like formula that absorbs quickly into the skin. I was looking for a lightweight serum to try over the summer and this fits that bill perfectly.

Leaves skin plumped with moisture: This is one of the benefits that you can see almost straight away. Once the serum has absorbed, you can feel a bouncier complexion. Just lightly prodding your cheek (I know it sounds strange, but trust me on this), you can feel more bounce. This is further enhanced by the serum allowing deeper absorption of your moisturiser of choice.

Instantly skin looks brighter and more luminous: I didn’t see instant brightening or luminousity. After two or three days though I did notice a subtle glow. That is still a pretty swift benefit.

With regular use, skin appears smoother, more healthy and translucent, with an even tone: This I can attest to. I have used this for 6 months and after the first month passed, I can say that I have noticed additional weekly improvement in my skin tone, and a return to natural glow of my early teens. This is by far the most valuable benefit to me personally, as I am now feeling more free to bare my natural skin without feeling like I’m ‘slumming it’.

Perfect for day and night: I’ve been using day and night and have felt no skin sensitivity, or other indicators of ‘over-use’, so I can accept the day/ night claim as valid.

Other features:

The scent is a light oriental blossom-y fragrance (which I really love) but for those who prefer scent-free, it does fade once the serum is absorbed by the skin.

The packaging is a heavy, glass bottle which is opaque. This is important as it protects the integrity of the serum inside. Clear glass, if kept in sunlight (even on a dressing table) can alter the efficacy of the serum. The white bottle gives it an air of purity while still maintaining the integrity of the serum. Genius.

I’m not quite as fond of the glass dropper, but only because I’m a clumsy mare. I fear I’ll drop and smash it, thus ruining the bottle. I would prefer a synthetic or otherwise less delicate pipette for safety.

The verdict

I’m not put off by the price tag, as one bottle has lasted me 6 months, with twice daily use. The difference I’ve seen in my skin over the past 6 months has really made me see the benefits of good daily serum, something I’ve never been that fussed about before. For me, this has now become an essential on my dressing table.
