Shizen is an Aussie brand started by Aromatherapy & Skincare professional Simone Wyndham. The brand specialises in organic, GMO-free, cruelty-free lip care products. I was first introduced through the now defunct My Beauty Emporium when I had a £30 voucher for their online store. I was suffering from very dry lips at the time so thought I’d give Shizen a go.

I bought the 15ml Shizen lip serum which comes in a little glass bottle with a glass pipette. It feels quite high end and luxurious, which belies it’s high street price tag (£15 for 15ml).

When I first put it on my lips, I found it made my lips feel drier after 15 minutes or so. I stopped using after 3 days and hid it away at the back of my dressing table and forgot about it. After a recent shortage/ disappearance of my go-to- lip care product, Lanolips 101 Ointment (my kids had swiped it!) I decided to give Shizen another go.

This time I followed the instructions! One or two drops on clean, dry lips at night. Then you just go to sleep and let the serum do it’s thing.

What is “its thing”?

Our formula of 100% pure plant oils mimic the skin’s natural sebum (oil). Considering our lips don’t have oil glands it’s a wonder how you ever lived without it!! Added Vitamins A & E and Jojoba oil nourish in an instant. Added essential oils of Sweet Orange, Lime & Lemon Myrtle penetrate to ensure long lasting hydration.

Best used by placing one drop under your favourite Shizen Lip product: Tint, Stick, Lip, whatever takes your fancy. If you really must use a lipstick, put one drop under your lipstick.

Certified Organic Sweet Almond Pure Oil, Certified Organic Jojoba Oil, Certified Organic Apricot Kernel Oil, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Orange Essential Oil, Lime Essential Oil, Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil.

Did it work? How long after did I see results?

Yes, it worked for me. I had very dry, chapped lips that felt very tight and would often bleed, if I wasn’t slapping on heavy ointment (Lanolips or Dr Lipp Nipple Balm) 3-4 times a day. Acidic drinks would make my lips sting if they were in a ‘dry phase’. On one of these ‘dry phases’ I started using 2-3 drops of Shizen Hydrating Lip Serum nightly.

After the first night, the dry, dead cells peeled away, but the skin underneath was less sore. After the second night, my lips felt smooth and comfortable. I was still applying Lanolips 2-3 times a day in daytime but using less. After the third night, my lips felt and looked visibly more hydrated. There was no soreness and I only needed to top up with Lanolips after eating, and only needed the tiniest amount. I’ve used it every night for the past 2 months and my lips are in really good condition now.

How far does a bottle go?

15ml is a lot considering you only use 1-2 drops a night. I’ve used mine every night for 2 months and have approx 90% left.

Yay or nay

If you have sensitive lips, chapped lips or sore lips then it’s definitely worth trying. Obviously stay away if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, but as these are very clear on the website, you can easily identify what’s in the product without needing a chemists degree.
