Indulge Beauty

Finding a new beauty store is always exciting. Even more so when it stocks some real gems. Wandering through Westfield Stratford City I stumbled into this store, more out of curiousity than actually needing anything.

As soon as I walked in I got very excited by the very first shelf… Dr Bronners Castile soap! This is near impossible to buy in the UK, but all the US pro makeup artists in my social groups consider it a holy grail for brush cleaning. I was impressed as soon as I walked through the door.

Other hard to find or usually ‘online-only’ brands featured include My Kit Co (must-have makeup artist set bags and brushes), NIOD, Erborian, The Ordinary, and Nudestix. It doesn’t just stop with products, but they also stock high end skincare gadget brand Foreo amongst others.

The only thing that put me off was the service. The store was dead quiet and I felt watched and was followed around by the staff. I asked about availability of a different fragrance of the Castile soap and was responded to quite curtly, “No, this is the full range, would you like it or not?” to which I replied, “No, there are other scents, I have seen them online, I’ll just buy elsewhere.”

After that, every time I picked something up to look at, I was practically followed around the store. It put me off. If I picked up an expensive product, I was told “We have more budget-friendly options as well”.

It’s not that I’m not used to assumptions being made about my skin colour or ability to pay based on how I’m dressed, but this is 2018. I’m done with that shit.
