Since The Awakening was published in the Spring issue of Bring Me magazine, a number of people have asked me what I used to create the makeup looks. In particular it’s the natural but glowing skin and the natural nude lips that most have asked about.

My makeup style focuses on real looking skin. To achieve this I make sure that I keep the foundation as sheer as possible and build up coverage only in places where it’s really needed. Heavy or full coverage foundation over freckles and moles will just make the skin look opaque and unnatural. I let natural elements such as freckles and moles show through glowing, almost translucent skin. This keeps the realism to the skin.

When choosing a lip colour, I start by choosing a shade similar to the natural lip colour of the model I’m working on. I’ll then look at the undertones in their skin and add a hint of cool (blue-tone) or warm (peach/ orange tone) lip tar or lip mixer to adapt the shade to a custom blend for the model. It is rare that I use a single lip shade, and I find that mixing two or more will give you the most natural but flawless looking lip.

Where possible, I like to keep brows natural. I brush them up and then set lightly with clear gel. Perfect brows can look overdone against natural makeup looks and Insta-brows go against the soft, undone looks I love.

Powder is important to set foundation and concealer. The one thing I notice most about men and women wearing makeup is that in most cases, they are using more powder than is necessary. You actually need much less powder than you’d think. A really light handed dusting over t-zone and lightly pressed into concealer to set it and you’re done. Your makeup is set but you don’t lose the skin realism and dewy finish.
